Are leaders born or taught? Am I a leader or a follower? Do I command or do I obey? Am I first or last? Am I a chief/Oga or ‘just’ an employee? Am I technically or academically ready to lead or I’m still developing?
All these fascinating questions generate more trouble than solutions insofar as they may present us with false dilemmas. Most likely we can answer the questions by saying yes and no, both, or it depends. We are complex beings and therefore we live complex lives, complex realities, where a dichotomic, binary approach is comfortable but illusory. Whether we like it or not, our world is neither black nor white and it is not even gray.
Our world is sometimes black, sometimes white, sometimes gray, and a lot of times our world morphs into colors we never even knew existed. Therefore, it is always a good idea to keep it simple, to go back to basics, to ground ourselves on principles instead of fashions.
I truly believe that the two rules of great leadership presented by Anderton, as a summary of 600 years of leadership theory, are ‘simple’ and wide enough to provide us with food for taught and eagerness for action. I certainly will not tell you which are the rules, watch the video, but I will tell you something: You -yes YOU- ARE A LEADER and… Machiavelli got it wrong!
Great leadership comes down to only two rules:
Take care and stay safe. I wish you a wonderful day!
